Dust Mites
Dust Mites are microscopic insects that live on dead skin cells shed by humans and animals. Thousands to Millions of them can be found (but not seen) along with their feaces on your pillow, mattress, sheets, carpets, mats, upholstered furniture & soft toys. They can also be floating in the air whenever anyone walks or disturbs the area.
How do they affect us?
They can cause respiratory or dermatological problems such as:
- Itchy nose, itchy eyes, itchy skin
- Sneezing
- Coughing
- Wheezing, Respiratory conditions such as Asthma
- Tight feeling in the chest
- Feeling breathless
- A runny nose
- Skin rashes such as eczema
Dust Mite Control & Prevention
Vacuum regularly including your mattress (especially around the rim), rugs, skirtings and upholstered furniture. This is one of the most important areas to focus on as this is especially where you will find the troubled areas such as their dead bodies and faeces.
Use a Dust Mite Cover for your Mattress and Pillow (we can supply you with these, they are waterproof, breathable and we have fully encased or fitted sheet style protectors available that are easy to launder).
Wash sheets and pillowcases weekly in hot water (above 55 degrees). Tumble dry is also recommended on a hot setting – this will kill the dust mites but unfortunately not the allergens they produce.
When dusting, use electrostatic cloths to remove dust than feather dusters that flick the dust through the air.
