How to Get Rid of Ants in the House: Brisbane Homeowner’s Guide

31 March 2025

How to get rid of ants in the house is a common concern for Brisbane homeowners, especially during the warmer months. Ants may be small, but they can cause big frustration when they start appearing in your kitchen, pantry, or bathroom. In this guide, we’ll show you effective ways to remove ants, prevent future infestations, and protect your home from these persistent pests.

Why Are Ants Invading Your Home?

Brisbane’s warm, humid climate encourages ant activity—especially from October to March. Ants are usually looking for:

  • Sugary or greasy food scraps

  • Pet food or crumbs

  • Moisture from leaks or damp areas

  • Entry points through unsealed cracks and gaps

If you want to know how to get rid of ants in the house, the first step is to understand why they're there in the first place. Eliminating food sources and blocking access points is key to long-term control.

How to Eradicate Ants in House: Step-by-Step

1. Identify the Ant Species

Different species need different treatments. In Brisbane, the most common are:

  • Sugar ants – attracted to sweets

  • Coastal brown ants – often nest in gardens or wall cavities

  • Black house ants – thrive in kitchens and bathrooms

When learning how to get rid of ants in the house, it's crucial to identify the type of ant and apply the right treatment.

2. Find Entry Points and Trails

Ants leave pheromone trails. Locate where they’re entering and clean the trail with a vinegar and water solution to disrupt their communication.

3. Clean and Sanitise Thoroughly

  • Wipe down benchtops and sweep floors daily

  • Store all food in airtight containers

  • Rinse pet bowls and don’t leave food out overnight

  • Take out the rubbish regularly

4. Try Natural Ant Repellents

  • Vinegar and water spray

  • Peppermint oil around windows and doors

  • Cinnamon or cucumber peels near entry points

5. Use Ant Baits Correctly

Ant baits work by allowing ants to bring poison back to the colony. Place them near trails but avoid spraying directly—this kills foragers, not the nest.

Getting Rid of Ants Indoors: Prevention Tips

The key to getting rid of ants indoors for good is a solid prevention plan tailored to Brisbane homes:

  • Seal up cracks and gaps around your home

  • Fix leaking taps and pipes

  • Keep gardens trimmed and away from external walls

  • Regularly inspect pantries, sinks, and skirting boards

Preventative maintenance is just as important as eradication.

Flying Ant Insects: From Identification to Pest Control

18 September 2024

Flying Ant Insects

Flying ant insects, also known as alates, are common during certain times of the year, usually when they swarm to mate and establish new colonies. Knowing how to identify flying ants and differentiate them from flying termites is crucial for effective pest control. At D-Tec Pest Solutions, we provide expert residential pest control services to help you manage and eliminate flying ants from your home. Let's explore all you need to know about these winged insects.

Comparing Flying Ants and Flying Termites

Flying ants and flying termites can look similar, but there are key differences to help you identify them correctly:

  • Body Shape: Flying ants have a segmented body with a narrow waist, while flying termites have a more uniform, straight-sided body.
  • Antennae: Ants have elbowed antennae, whereas termites have straight, bead-like antennae.
  • Wings: Flying ants have two pairs of wings with the front wings larger than the back wings. Termites have two pairs of wings that are equal in size and longer than their body.
  • Color: Ants can be black, brown, or red, while termites are usually a pale cream or light brown color.

Signs of Ants with Wings Infestation

Identifying the presence of flying ants early can help prevent larger problems. Here are some signs you may have a flying ant infestation:

  • Swarmers Indoors: Spotting flying ants indoors, especially near windows and doors, is a clear indication.
  • Discarded Wings: Finding piles of shed wings around your home, indicating that swarmers have entered and shed their wings.
  • Ant Trails: Discovering ant trails leading to food sources or nesting areas.
  • Nesting Sites: Noticing small piles of dirt or debris where ants are excavating space for nests.

Steps to Get Rid of Flying Ants

Here are some effective steps to eliminate flying ants from your home:

1. Identify Nest Locations

Inspect your home for possible nesting sites. Flying ants often nest in wood or soil. Look for small holes or mounds where they may be entering and exiting.

2. Seal Entry Points

Close off potential entry points by sealing cracks, gaps, and holes around windows, doors, and foundations with caulk or weatherstripping.

3. Use Ant Baits and Traps

Place ant baits and traps near suspected nesting sites and along ant trails. Ants will take the bait back to their colony, effectively eliminating the nest.

4. Maintain Cleanliness

Keep your home clean by regularly disposing of food waste, wiping down surfaces, and storing food in airtight containers to reduce attractants.

5. Professional Pest Control

If the infestation persists, calling a professional pest control service is essential. Pest control experts have the knowledge and tools to effectively eliminate flying ants and prevent future infestations. Effective Strategies for Eliminating Ants

Ants can quickly become a nuisance in your home, invading your kitchen, pantry, and other areas. Knowing how to get rid of ants effectively is crucial for maintaining a clean and comfortable living environment. At D-Tec Pest Solutions, we offer expert residential pest control services to help you eliminate ants and prevent future infestations. Let's explore some proven methods for dealing with ant problems.

Understanding the Ant Problem

The first step in getting rid of ants is identifying the type of ant you're dealing with. Common household ants include:

  • Argentine Ants: These ants are light to dark brown and often found in kitchens and bathrooms.
  • Carpenter Ants: Larger black ants that nest in wood and can cause structural damage.
  • Odorous House Ants: Small brown ants that emit a foul odor when crushed.
  • Pharaoh Ants: Tiny yellow or light brown ants known for infesting healthcare facilities.

Steps to Get Rid of Ants

Here are some effective steps to eliminate ants from your home:

1. Identify and Seal Entry Points

Inspect your home for potential entry points where ants may be entering. Seal cracks, gaps, and crevices around doors, windows, and foundations using caulk or weatherstripping.

2. Eliminate Food and Water Sources

Ants are attracted to food and water. Keep your kitchen and dining areas clean, store food in airtight containers, and fix any leaky pipes or faucets to reduce attractants.

3. Use Ant Baits

Ant baits are an effective way to control ants. Place bait stations near ant trails and entry points. Ants will carry the bait back to their colony, effectively eliminating the entire nest.

4. Natural Remedies

Natural remedies such as vinegar, lemon juice, and essential oils (like peppermint or tea tree oil) can deter ants. Spray these solutions around entry points and ant trails.

5. Professional Pest Control

What is the difference between Ants and Termites – D-Tec Pest Solutions

26 May 2021
Contact Us

A common question we receive is "what is the difference between Ants and Termites". There are a few different characteristics to distinguish between these two insects. Many Clients are often confused between them, but there are some physical and behavioural differences.

Difference Between Ant and Termite

Termite vs Ants

To the untrained eye Termites and Ants can look very similar. People see them because they are the same size and look the same in shape that they don't know the difference. So what is the differences between termite vs ants? Below we list the differences so you can distinguish between the two.

Physical Differences

Starting at the top of the insect, Ants have a elbowed antennae that is segmented and Termites have a straight, beaded antennae. With the abdomen you will find that an Ant has a pinched waste where as, a Termite has a thick waste.

The reproductive of both these insects both have wings, Ants have unequal length wings and Termites have equal length wings.

Termites are usually translucent in colour, they are normally white/cream (hence the nick name white ants) and Ants are darker in colour.

Behaviour Differences

The biggest behaviour difference is in terms of what they eat. Termites can digest cellulose so they eat wood, unfortunately for Homeowners, this can be a nightmare. Ants on the other hand eat sweet foods, plants, seeds, moss, fungus, other animals and insects.

The way they both search for food they also have different behaviours. Ants are usually above ground, foraging and in search of food, they leave pheromones for others to find a food source and go back to their colony. Most Termite species are subterranean and they eat the wood they travel through, they build galleries and mud tubes to protect themselves.

Termite vs Ants

Are White Ants and Termites the same thing?

The answer is YES, White Ants and Termites are the same thing. White Ants are not Ants, in fact White Ants are more closely related to Cockroaches than Ants. It is believed that Termites evolved from the Cockroach, in particular they are closely related to the Wood Feeding Cockroach.

Controlling Termites and Ants around your property

Knowing the differences and behaviours can help you spot the difference of both species but controlling them is where a Professional can help you. We have fully trained Technician's that know the biology, ecology and how to control these pests around your home. You can learn more about how to treat for Ants and Termites on our Website or call our Office to protect your home on 1300 725 758.
